Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Edge bill validation.

Getting started

How do my customers get into the system?

Upload a bill and Edge creates the customer profile automatically from the invoice: company name, meter number, supplier, rates, and contract details. A bill for a customer you haven't added yet adds them as a client by itself. You can also connect your CRM via the API and bills flow in without any manual work.

What types of bills can you read?

Electricity (including half-hourly), gas, water, and sewerage. PDFs, JPEG, PNG and WebP photos. One PDF can hold several bills and each is found and checked separately.

Where are bills read?

Bills from suppliers the app knows are read on our own UK server and never leave it. An unfamiliar layout is read by AI and the screen says which reader was used. If a client will not have their data leave the UK, you can tick 'Read our bills on Edge's server only' under Settings.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Free for up to 10 customers and 30 meters. No card required. No time limit. You can validate bills, generate reports, and see the full product before you spend anything.

Do I need a supply contract to use Edge?

No. Without a contract on file, Edge checks against market benchmarks. You'll still catch bills that are significantly above market rates. For line-by-line accuracy, upload the supply contract and every bill for those meters is checked against the agreed rates.

How validation works

How does a bill move through the system?

Six steps: upload (or send via API), automatic validation against the contract, colour rating (green/amber/red), human review of flagged bills, dispute with the supplier, and money recovered. Green bills need nothing. Amber bills are watched. Red bills go to your review queue.

What do the colours mean?

Green means clean, nothing to do. Amber means a small overcharge, an undercharge, an estimated read, or unusual usage. It's watched but not queued. Red means a person needs to look: an overcharge above your threshold, a possible duplicate, overlapping billing periods, or figures that don't agree with each other.

What does Edge actually check?

Unit rates and standing charges against the contract. VAT at the correct percentage. Climate Change Levy at the current HMRC rate. Consumption against the meter's recent average. Overlapping billing periods, gaps between bills, zero consumption, estimated reads, duplicates, and whether the figures on the bill add up.

How fast is it?

Most bills are validated in under 30 seconds.

What about half-hourly meters?

Half-hourly bills are read and checked. You can also upload the supplier's half-hourly consumption file (CSV) and Edge checks that day usage is charged at the day rate, night usage at the night rate, and the total matches the meter.

What if the same bill is uploaded twice?

It's not rejected. It's saved, checked, and marked red as a possible duplicate so a person decides. A second bill for the same meter and period with a different total is flagged amber as a likely re-bill.

What if Edge flags something that isn't actually an error?

Every flag shows what was checked and why. Your reviewer sees the original bill beside the checks, with the line each figure was read from marked on the page. They can approve it as correct with one click. You always have the final say.

Can I correct a misread figure?

Yes. On the review screen, use 'Correct the reading', fix the figure, then 'Save corrections and check again'. The bill is re-checked with the corrected figures.

Disputes and money back

How do disputes work?

One dispute per client per supplier. It can hold one bill or fifty. All overcharged meters with one supplier go into a single dispute with one report and one email. It moves through four stages: To send, Awaiting reply, In progress, and Credited.

Does Edge send the email to the supplier?

On Professional and above, yes. The platform sends the email under your company name with the report attached. Replies come to your own email address. You can also download the PDF and send it yourself.

What's in the dispute report?

For each error: the invoice number, meter, billing period, what was wrong, the amount, and the line from the supplier's own invoice. The original file is kept for 90 days.

Reports and branding

Do the reports go out under my brand?

On Professional and above, every report carries your logo, company name, and contact details. Your customers see your brand, not ours. On Free, reports carry Edge branding.

Can I export data?

Yes. On Growth and above, Reports has 'Export to spreadsheet' which gives a CSV. Reports can also be exported as PDF. The API lets external systems send bills and read results.

Pricing and billing

How is pricing structured?

Per customer, not per bill or per user. Free covers 10 customers. Professional is £299/month for up to 100 customers. Growth is £599/month for up to 500 customers. Enterprise is custom pricing for unlimited customers. Annual billing saves 20%.

Can I invoice my clients for recovered money?

On Professional and above. Set your commission percentage under Settings, and each month Edge creates draft invoices for each client based on money recovered. The invoice carries your name, logo, and bank details. Nothing of Edge's.

Data and security

Where is my data stored?

On our own UK-based server. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Uploaded bill files are deleted after 90 days. The figures read from them stay in the account. Each broker account is fully isolated.

Who can see my data?

Only people on your team. Each account is fully isolated. Your clients, bills, and contracts are never visible to other brokers on the platform.

What are the team roles?

Owner has full access. Admin can do everything the owner can: invite people, change settings, manage billing. Member can upload, review, approve, escalate, manage clients and contracts, but can't change settings or billing.

API and integrations

Can I connect Edge to my CRM?

On Growth and Enterprise. Your systems can send bills and read results via the API without anyone opening the app. There's also a webhook that calls your CRM the moment something happens to a bill.

What webhook events are available?

bill.checked, bill.approved, bill.escalated, bill.resolved, bill.reopened, dispute.sent, dispute.replied, dispute.credited, dispute.closed, and dispute.reopened. Each carries the bill ID and your own reference if you sent one.
